The Municipality of Valongo detected two foci of legionella in changing rooms of sports and school facilities. The affected spaces were immediately closed and submitted to disinfection processes to eliminate the contamination.
The municipal authorities are carrying out counter-analyses at the locations to determine when it will be possible to reopen them without restrictions. The objective is to ensure that the spaces are completely safe before they are used by the population again.
Legionella is a bacteria that can cause legionnaires' disease, a potentially serious lung disease, and is frequently associated with stagnant water systems in facilities such as changing rooms and swimming pools.
