The Eiffel Tower was closed to the public on Monday due to a strike by its staff, in protest against instructions deemed "unacceptable" issued by the monument's management. The stoppage came following a visit by an Indian delegation, during which women were allegedly asked to be hidden during the visit.
According to the information reported, the delegation was composed of men and did not want to interact with women, which allegedly led to female Eiffel Tower staff being directed to stay away during the visit. The Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, responsible for managing the monument, is said to have given instructions to that effect.
The Indian delegation in question, however, denies having made any request for women to be hidden. The Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel has yet to publicly comment on the situation, having neither confirmed nor denied the alleged discriminatory instructions.
The closure of the Eiffel Tower to the public on Monday represented a strong protest by the workers, who considered the instructions given by management to be unacceptable. The monument is one of the most visited tourist spots in Paris and the stoppage affected thousands of visitors.
