How an old promise of "picanha on the plate" for everyone can turn against Lula da Silva

Euronews Portugal8 September 2026 at 20:03

Since Lula da Silva made the promise to put "picanha on the plate" of all Brazilians, during the 2022 electoral campaign, the price of beef in Brazil has been consistently rising.

The expression, used by the Brazilian president during the presidential race, is now being exploited by the opposition as a political argument against the government.

The opposition uses the original promise to demonstrate what they consider to be an economic failure under Lula da Silva's leadership, pointing to the disparity between what was promised and the reality experienced by Brazilians.
