EU responds to Trump with 200 million and a new alliance in Greenland

ZAP Notícias8 September 2026 at 18:20

The European Union will invest 200 million euros in Greenland, in a gesture aimed at countering the ambitions of the United States over the island. The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the funds during a two-day visit to Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital.

The investment is part of a broader campaign to strengthen ties between the EU and Greenland. Von der Leyen's visit aims to show support for the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, which is a member state of the European Union.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has been insisting that Greenland should be American. This geopolitical dispute over the island has been heated by Arctic melting, which has made the region more strategically important in economic and military terms.
