The H25 traffic sign, which shows a white car on a blue background, indicates the entrance to a road reserved for cars and motorcycles in Portugal. According to the Traffic Signalling Regulations and the Road Code, from this point onwards, rules specifically intended for this type of road come into effect.
The following are prohibited from using these roads: pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds, quadricycles, agricultural vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles with engine capacity not exceeding 50 cm³, as well as vehicles unable to exceed 60 km/h or those to which a maximum speed equal to or below that value has been set. This prohibition is provided for in articles 72 and 75 of the Road Code.
The rules applicable to these roads also prohibit reversing direction, making U-turns or crossing traffic dividers. Stopping and parking are also prohibited, except in areas specifically designated for these purposes, and entry and exit must be made through the designated accesses.
Unauthorized use of these roads is penalized with fines between 120 and 600 euros, in accordance with article 72. Loss of points does not automatically result from the violation, depending on the classification of the infraction and a final conviction decision. The H39 sign indicates the end of the reserved road, and the H25 may appear accompanied by a distance panel serving as advance notice.
