Former mayor from Nordeste, Azores, sentenced to 10 years in prison for embezzlement and document forgery

The former president of the City Council of Nordeste, in the Azores, Carlos Mendonça, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Judicial Court of the Azores District. Mendonça, who was elected by the Socialist Party, was found guilty of embezzlement, document forgery and abuse of power.

According to the Public Prosecutor's office, some of the crimes were committed individually. The court followed the sentences requested by the Public Prosecutor's office, resulting in a decade of imprisonment.

This case involves a mayor from a municipality on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. The conviction represents one of the most significant cases of accountability for a former city council president in the region.
