Get ready to pay more for food: four crises are pressuring global food prices

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 16:52

International organizations and economists are warning about a situation that is beginning to take on the contours of a "perfect storm" in the global food system. According to experts, four distinct crises are simultaneously exerting pressure on global food prices, which should result in higher costs for consumers.

The combination of these four crises is creating unprecedented conditions in global food markets. The warnings come at a time when many countries are already facing economic difficulties and aggravated food vulnerabilities due to previous crises.

The international organizations that monitor food security worldwide have been publishing reports documenting this situation. The economists consulted point to the complexity of factors contributing to price increases, suggesting that the impact on consumers could be significant and prolonged.

Given this scenario, experts warn that families should prepare for higher food costs. The situation represents a particular challenge for the most vulnerable countries and populations with less financial capacity to absorb price increases.

However, it maintains the aggressive pricing policy, which should be around 17,500 euros. Specifications include an 80 hp engine, a 27.5 kWh battery and a range of 250 km. The launch is scheduled for the end of the year.

The Association of Specialized Credit Institutions (ASFAC) met in Lisbon with a delegation from the China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), which represents approximately 18,000 members in the Chinese automobile sector, to discuss cooperation opportunities in automobile financing, with special focus on new energy vehicles. ASFAC highlighted the relevance of southern Europe as a reference in automobile credit and presented the Portuguese market, whose sector represents more than 75% of credit granted to individuals for financing. However, ASFAC criticized the absence of concrete information on the transposition to Portugal of the new European consumer credit contracts regime, whose deadline ended in November 2025, warning that this uncertainty harms the preparation of institutions and the evaluation of new partnerships. The meeting had the support of the Embassy of China in Portugal and the law firm Broseta.
