Wine industry association calls on Government to extend support to other regions

Diário de Viseu8 September 2026 at 14:15

A wine industry association called on the Government to extend the financial support announced for the Douro region to other territories. The request comes at a time of difficulty for the sector, which faces economic and climate challenges.

The association argues that the support measures should be extended beyond the Douro, covering other wine-producing regions in Portugal. The national wine sector has been facing various pressures affecting producers from different parts of the country.

Regarding the support announced for the Douro, the association states that this should be funded through public resources. This indication suggests that the Government intends to mobilize funds from the State Budget or public funds to support the Duriense region.

The association's appeal seeks to ensure that wine producers in other regions are not disadvantaged compared to Douro farmers, who recently benefited from specific support announcements by government authorities.

PSI leads gains on a day of mixed sentiment in European stock exchanges

European stock exchanges closed without a single direction, with Lisbon standing out as the big exception, as the PSI-20 led the gains, rising 0.66%, to 9,481.29 points, driven by construction companies Mota-Engil and Teixeira Duarte, as well as Galp Energia, which benefited both from the prime minister's statements about negotiations with Moeve and from the rise in oil prices. Brent approached 100 dollars, but sovereign debt yields remained stable. While the Euro STOXX 50, the STOXX Europe 600, the CAC 40 and the DAX closed in positive territory, Madrid, Milan and London registered slight losses. The market now has its eyes on Thursday, when the ECB is expected to announce a 25 basis point rate hike for the Eurozone.

Auto insurance refusals lead ASF to intervene in 17 cases in 2025

The Authority for Insurance Supervision and Pension Funds (ASF) intervened in 2025 to guarantee mandatory Motor Third Party Liability coverage for 17 vehicles, after successive refusals by insurance companies, representing an increase of approximately 42% compared to the 12 cases registered in 2023 and 2024. When insurance companies reject a subscription at least three times, ASF activates the SORCA mechanism, a last-resort solution, upon proof of refusal from at least three different companies. Insurance companies' risk assessment is based on the claims history declaration and, where applicable, on internal data regarding frequency and indemnity amounts. The obligation to accept the contract is distributed proportionally to the insurance companies' market shares, with coverage limited to mandatory third party liability insurance.

The buyer doesn't want to know how much premium they pay. They want to know which risks are not covered

An opinion article addresses the importance of insurance programs in business acquisition and sale processes. The text explains that during due diligence, buyers are more interested in identifying uncovered risks than in the premium value paid. Examples are given from sectors such as food (absence of Product Recall insurance) and technology (lack of Cyber Insurance), which can influence negotiations, contractual guarantees, and even the final transaction price. The article also mentions international practices such as Warranty & Indemnity Insurance and concludes that preparing a company for sale also involves demonstrating that the main risks have been identified and transferred to insurers.
