The XI National Congress on Irrigation and Drainage takes place in Beja between September 30 and October 2, at NERBE's Auditorium, bringing together political leaders, farmers, researchers and companies in the sector. The event, organized by the Operational Center and Irrigation Technology (COTR), addresses the theme "Water to Produce the Future: Resilience, Efficiency and Intelligence in Water Resources", with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea in the opening session.
Climate change could increase water needs for irrigation in Portugal by 27.5% between 2071 and 2100, in a less favorable climate scenario. This projection, disclosed by the General Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DGADR), highlights the urgency of modernizing infrastructure and accelerating water efficiency. Currently, irrigation covers 633.1 thousand hectares, corresponding to 17% of the national agricultural surface, but accounts for approximately 30% of agricultural production, with irrigation system efficiency increasing 18% between 1999 and 2023.
Artificial intelligence and digital transformation will take center stage in the discussions, with debates on the application of sensors, drones, satellite imagery and forecasting systems in water management. The congress will also include the presentation of the National Barometer on Efficient Water Use in Agriculture, developed by COTR in partnership with CONSULAI, which aims to monitor the evolution of irrigation practices and technology adoption. Entities such as DGADR, APA, EDIA, CAP, GEOTA, INESC TEC and the University of Córdoba are participating in the event.
