Vivas asks for a forceful response from the EU to Morocco for using migratory pressure

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General8 September 2026 at 13:08

The president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, asked this Tuesday for a forceful response from the European Union to Morocco for the episodes of migratory pressure recorded in late July. Vivas warned during a press conference at the European Parliament that the sociosanitary situation in the city is at the limit and unsustainable.

The leader underscored that cooperation with neighboring countries must be subordinated to respect for territorial limits and conditioned the maintenance of agreements between the EU and Rabat on compliance with these border containment requirements.

During his intervention, Vivas directly appealed to the European Commission and all Union bodies to actively intervene in the return to Morocco of people who accessed the city irregularly.

The head of the Ceuta Executive also insisted that the only possible way for the territory to recover institutional normalcy is through an energetic response from European institutions regarding the situation created.

MAI reassures in Government: "I maintain confidence in myself to continue in the position"

The Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, reiterated this Tuesday in Parliament his intention to remain in office, stating he maintains "confidence in myself" and ensuring he has the support of the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro. The hearing before the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees took place in a context of intense political pressure, with the opposition questioning decisions made during his tenure as director of the Judicial Police — including the transfer of an impounded trailer to a company with contracts with the PJ, works on his property in Odemira and omissions in his wealth declarations. Chega directly demanded his resignation, while the PSD closed ranks around the minister and the PS transferred to Montenegro the responsibility of evaluating the political viability of his continuity. Neves refused to put his position at the disposal of the government, acknowledged that there were informal acts, but rejected having acted for his own benefit, for third parties or against the interest of the State.
