Nine environmental organizations are calling for the urgent creation of the Salgados Lagoon Natural Reserve, in the Algarve. The entities advocate for the protection and integrated management of more than 400 hectares of this wetland.
The request comes following a new mass die-off of animals in the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, which has further alerted advocates of this cause to the need for immediate intervention in the preservation of the lagoon.
Salgados Lagoon is a wetland of significant environmental importance, which has been facing threats due to the absence of formal protection status. The environmentalists argue that the creation of the reserve is essential to guarantee the region's biodiversity.
The article was originally published by the Barlavento newspaper, which reported on this mobilization of organizations to pressure authorities to proceed with the creation of the natural reserve.
