More than 1700 pregnant women or people on parental leave did not see their contracts renewed in 2025, according to data cited by CGTP-IN. The union warns that this situation represents a violation of the rights of these workers, who should be protected during these periods of absence from the labor market.
CGTP-IN expressed deep concern about this reality, considering that these practices undermine the legal protection that should exist for pregnant women and those on parental leave. The union emphasizes that the law provides specific guarantees for these cases, which are not being respected.
The trade union organization strongly criticized what it considers a contradiction in birth policies. According to CGTP-IN, it is incoherent to ask women to have more children while their work continues to be less valued and paid, and while they are targets of discrimination in the workplace.
This situation arises in the context of a broader debate on measures to support birth rates and family in Portugal, with the union arguing that any policy in this area must guarantee dignified working conditions and equal treatment for all workers.
