Portugal may have a wild boar population close to 400,000 animals, according to an international study that produced the first large-scale European map with quantitative density estimates of the species.
The work was published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research and involved Portuguese researchers from CESAM and the Department of Biology, among other international collaborators.
The research enabled the creation of detailed cartography of wild boar distribution and density on a European scale, allowing a better understanding of the geographical distribution and environmental impact of the species.
This type of information is relevant for planning management and population control strategies, as well as for assessing the risks associated with the proliferation of wild boars in agricultural and urban areas.
