Cinema audiences in August almost double compared to same period last year

Portuguese cinemas received almost 1.8 million spectators in August, an increase of 83.5% compared to the same month last year. The Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA) revealed that this significant growth was driven by the new Spider-Man film, which attracted large audiences to national theaters. In the first eight months of the year, cinemas registered an 11% increase in the number of spectators, rising from 7.7 million tickets sold in the same period last year to 8.5 million. Regarding revenue, there was growth of 110.8% in August, totaling 13.2 million euros.

A growing number of OECD countries and partner economies are implementing taxes on banks and sectors considered "highly profitable" to offset increased public expenditure, according to the "Tax Policy Reforms 2026" report. The OECD states that in 2025, there was a significant expansion of sectoral taxes on business income, often focused on excess profits. Portugal is preparing to tax the surplus profits of the oil sector through a Temporary Solidarity Contribution. The report also highlights trends in personal income tax, with reductions in the first brackets in Portugal, and in Social Security contributions, which have been increasing in response to demographic pressures. In corporate income tax, although a similar number of jurisdictions increased and reduced rates, increases tended to be higher than reductions.
