The number of active large companies in Mozambique increased 26.1% in 2025, rising from 995 to 1,255 units, employing almost 248 thousand workers, according to the "Statistics on Companies and Non-Profit Institutions 2025" report from the National Statistics Institute (INE). More than half of these companies, 687, were concentrated in the city of Maputo, which represented 54.7% of the national total, followed by Maputo province with 195 companies (15.5%). The highest growth rates were observed in Manica, with an increase of 209.5% (from 21 to 65 units), and in Cabo Delgado, with a rise of 172.7% (from 11 to 30 companies).
Large companies employed 247,789 workers in 2025, 8.9% more than the 227,498 registered in 2024. The city of Maputo led this indicator with 136,759 workers (55.2% of the total), followed by Maputo province with 33,250 workers (13.4%) and Sofala with 30,266 (12.2%). Cabo Delgado stood out again for employment growth, with an increase of 67.3%, while Tete recorded a rise of 45.7%. Conversely, Niassa and Gaza were the only provinces to register declines, of 13.1% and 7.0% respectively.
Regarding legal form, quota companies dominated this segment, representing 67.6% of active large companies, followed by joint-stock companies with 17.8% and single-member companies with 8.0%. Single-member companies registered growth of 152.5% in the number of large companies (from 40 to 101 units), while sole proprietors increased by 155% (from 20 to 51 companies).
In terms of employment, quota companies absorbed 147,195 workers, equivalent to 59.4% of people employed in large companies, followed by joint-stock companies with 69,049 workers (27.9% of the total).
