The National Association of Wine Denominations of Origin (ANDOVI) considers the support announced by the Government for Douro winegrowers to be positive, but argues that the measure should be extended to all wine-producing regions of the country, including the Tejo. The association, which represents the 14 wine-producing regions of mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores, warns that the problems currently experienced in the sector are not limited to the Douro.
In a statement, ANDOVI states that this is a measure confined to a single region, at a time when all Portuguese wine-producing regions face similar difficulties. The problems are mainly centered on the marketing of production and the decline in grape prices.
The association hopes that the aid now announced will constitute only the beginning of a more comprehensive response from the government, which addresses the needs of all producing regions and not just one.
