Iran criticizes Canada for supporting United States actions

Jornal Económico8 September 2026 at 09:47

Iran criticized Canada for supporting the United States' actions in the Strait of Hormuz. The criticism arose after Canada condemned Iran's destabilizing actions in the Middle East, in a joint statement by the Canadian ministers of foreign affairs and finance, who urged Tehran to end these activities and stated they were working with partners to maintain pressure on Iran.

The spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, responded through social media platform X, accusing Canada of having chosen to please the United States precisely on the day that the U.S. president, Donald Trump, presented Canada as being part of the United States, in violation of Canadian sovereignty and independence.

Baghaei questioned Canada's credibility in claiming to defend peace, security, freedom of navigation, and international law while supporting the United States' military aggression and what it considers illegal and interventionist actions by Washington in the Iran region.

The Iranian official highlighted the irony of Canada supporting the United States at a time when Trump spoke of making Canada the 51st U.S. state, and after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington failed last month.
