Costa and Von der Leyen lament "shocking" official support at Mladic's funeral in Serbia

The President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission today "deeply" lamented the "shocking" official support and the presence of senior Serbian officials at the funeral of former Bosnian-Serb commander Ratko Mladic, convicted of war crimes.

Ratko Mladic was commander of the army of Serbs in Bosnia during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The two European leaders expressed their indignation at the fact that senior Serbian officials were present and provided support for Mladic's funeral.

This is not the first time tensions have arisen between Serbia and the European Union regarding how the country deals with its past and with figures convicted of war crimes.
