Aragon eliminates Arabic language and Moroccan culture program: "What harm does it do? It helps children not lose their identity"

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General8 September 2026 at 08:57

The Government of Aragon, led by the PP, eliminated the Arabic language and Moroccan culture program that had been operating in the region for three years. The decision was made at the Vox party's demand, which considered the program unacceptable.

Around 500 students went through this program since its implementation. Only ten educational centers in the province of Huesca had joined this plan by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.

The program's objective was to maintain the cultural identity of young people of Moroccan origin and offer them a space to connect with their culture of origin. The regional government argued that this initiative helped prevent children from losing their roots.

The PP assumed Vox's demand as a condition to secure the investiture vote of Jorge Azcón as president of the autonomous government. Vox considered the program harmful, while its defenders highlighted that it caused no harm to the students.
