Portuguese youth prefer access to transport over owning a car

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 08:04

Portuguese youth aged 18-29 are changing their relationship with mobility, showing a clear preference for access to transport over owning a car. This generation, accustomed to choosing between different ways to get around, no longer necessarily considers having a car to be synonymous with independence.

According to a new survey conducted by the Behavioural Insights Unit at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, in partnership with the Bolt platform, only 27% of Portuguese youth associate car ownership with personal independence.

This data reveals a significant shift in mindset in a generation that increasingly values flexibility and the various transportation options available, from sharing services to public transport, over traditional vehicle ownership.
