The OECD warns of a worldwide reading comprehension problem: "Students have problems with texts of more than 400 words"

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General8 September 2026 at 08:37

The OECD warns about a worldwide reading comprehension problem, indicating that students have difficulties with texts with more than 400 words. This alert comes following the results of PISA 2022, the first post-pandemic report, which already showed a decline in school performance internationally.

In the 2022 assessment, Spain recorded a decline, although not as pronounced as in other countries. At the time, the OECD officials — the institution that organizes PISA every three years since 2020 — explained that the widespread deterioration could not be attributed exclusively to the lockdowns caused by covid-19, although they did not specify the remaining reasons.

PISA 2025, published this morning worldwide, reveals that, in Spain's specific case, the decline in level seems to have no brakes. Spanish averages are below the OECD and European Union averages, showing a concerning trend of continuity in the decline of academic performance.

This time, the OECD presents a clearer explanation for this debacle: the misuse of screens did not have consequences free of impact. This analysis suggests that excessive time in front of electronic devices may be contributing significantly to the decline in students' reading and comprehension skills.
