The former President of the United States, Donald Trump, published on the social media platform Truth Social a map with the US flag that covers not only American territory, but also Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada. The post immediately generated strong reactions on social media.
Hours before this post, Trump had suggested on the same platform that the American state of New Mexico should be renamed to "New America". This suggestion came in the context of his recent tariff threats against Mexico and Canada.
Trump's posts come at a time of trade tension, after he announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian products, in addition to an additional 10% fee on Chinese products. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has already responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs on American products.
The situation has also generated internal concern in the United States, with the Democratic Party asking the Republican Party to block Trump's tariff plans. The Republican Party, however, supported the measures, while the US Chamber of Commerce warned that the tariffs may put millions of American jobs at risk.
