Australia proposes heavy fines for social media that don't protect young people

The Australian government announced on Tuesday a bill that imposes fines of up to R$ 287 million on social media that don't protect young users from harmful content. The proposal, presented by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, would create a "duty of care" for companies responsible for platforms like Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

Companies would be responsible for protecting minors under 18 from pornography, cyberbullying, and content that glorifies crimes or promotes eating disorders. Albanese stated that the measure was taken because the community demands change.

Social media platforms face growing scrutiny over the use of allegedly addictive algorithms that keep users engaged for long periods. The Australian bill seeks to hold big tech companies directly accountable for the safety of young people on their platforms.
