Australia announced restrictions on the activities of major social media companies, in a regulatory move aimed at strengthening control over these platforms in the country. The Australian government proposed a bill that establishes new obligations for the tech giants operating within its territory.
According to the presented bill, any non-compliance with the new rules may result in significant fines. Companies that fail to comply with the established provisions face substantial financial penalties, in amounts that can reach 109 million Australian dollars, equivalent to approximately 67.5 million euros.
This measure comes in a context of growing concern in various countries about the power and influence of social media, as well as issues related to content moderation and the protection of user data. Australia positions itself among the nations adopting a stricter stance in the regulation of these digital platforms.
