The Portuguese Parliament debated and voted this Tuesday a motion of censure against the Government presented by the Chega party. The motion has as its central focus the maintenance of the Minister of Internal Administration in the executive.
The Chega party, of populist right, is responsible for presenting this motion of censure, in a gesture of opposition to the Government currently in office.
The rejection of the motion is guaranteed, since the executive counts on a parliamentary majority of the Socialist Party, which makes the approval of a motion of censure presented by the opposition improbable.
This type of motion of censure represents one of the constitutional tools available to the opposition parties to demonstrate their disagreement regarding the Government's actions, although in practice it is rarely approved when the executive has a majority.
