"AI is not yet today the biggest risk to financial literacy", but it may become so without "critical thinking development"

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 07:02

Sérgio Cardoso, chief education officer at Doutor Finanças, stated that artificial intelligence is not currently the biggest risk to the financial literacy of the Portuguese population. This position contrasts with the perception that many might have about the dangers associated with AI technology.

According to Sérgio Cardoso, there are other risks that he considers more concerning for financial literacy, specifically mentioning fraud as one of the main threats in this domain.

The official emphasized the importance of developing critical thinking as a fundamental element to protect consumers from potential future risks related to artificial intelligence and other financial threats.

This statement comes in the context of a broader debate about how to prepare the population for present and future financial challenges, where the capacity for critical thinking is pointed out as an essential tool.

The true value of sustainable finance is not in the price

The article argues that the true value of sustainable finance goes far beyond price and interest rates. Although many companies seek sustainable financing hoping to obtain better financial conditions, the real benefits include expanding financing options, strengthening reputation, better relationships with banks and investors, and greater optionality. European banking regulation requires increasing integration of environmental risks in risk management, which means that companies prepared with robust sustainable finance structures will be easier to evaluate and will have access to a broader universe of financiers. The article concludes that the relevant question is no longer whether sustainable finance reduces costs, but whether it can improve access to capital, strengthen credibility, and prepare companies for the evolution of the financial market.

Chinese exports grow 25% in August

Chinese exports grew 25% in August year-on-year, reaching 401.44 billion dollars, driven by demand for technological products such as batteries and semiconductors, and by seasonal orders before Christmas, despite trade tensions and typhoons that caused delays at Shanghai ports. Imports increased 28.2%, raising the trade surplus to 119.09 billion dollars. The export sector benefited from the expansion of artificial intelligence and concerns about energy security, while sales to the US rose 34.4% and to ASEAN 30.21%. China's growing trade surplus, which reached a record 1.2 trillion dollars in 2025, has drawn criticism in the West, with the US Treasury Secretary classifying it as "unsustainable".
