State already in REN's capital: purchase of 13.7% from Zara owner's company completed

Expresso8 September 2026 at 08:02

The Portuguese State, through Parpública, concluded the purchase of a 13.7% stake in REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais). The operation was announced on Monday night by Pontegadea, company of Zara's founder, Amancio Ortega.

Pontegadea sold all the shares it held in REN, thus leaving the Portuguese energy company with no participation. The value of the transaction was not made public.

Parpública is the entity responsible for managing the Portuguese State's holdings in several companies. With this acquisition, the State reinforces its position in REN, the company that manages the energy grids in Portugal.

This operation is part of the Portuguese government's strategy to increase State control over strategic infrastructure in the energy sector. REN is a company listed on the Lisbon stock exchange.

Union warns that hospitals are forcing doctors to perform administrative tasks

The situation is occurring in hospitals in Braga, Bragança, Vila Nova de Gaia, Santa Maria da Feira, Matosinhos, Porto and Viana do Castelo. The union warned that a diagnosis cannot be chosen based on the money it generates and recommended that doctors maintain rigorous clinical records and report any pressure to change diagnoses without clinical basis. A legal opinion from the union states that the imposition of this administrative task apparently lacks legal support.

The measure comes in a context of growing bilateral tensions, after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan's survival and justify intervention by the Self-Defense Forces.
