Finland closed 1,340 kilometres of its border with the Russian Federation in December, after the arrival of 1,300 undocumented migrants. This decision marks a significant tightening of border control measures by the Finnish government.
The closure was motivated by the unexpected flow of migrants trying to cross the land border between the two countries. Finnish authorities identified this situation as a potential threat to national security.
As an additional protection measure, Finland is inaugurating a new physical barrier along more than 200 kilometres of the border. This infrastructure aims to make unauthorized crossings more difficult and strengthen surveillance in the border zone.
The Finnish government justifies these measures as necessary to protect its borders and control irregular immigration, in a context of geopolitical tensions in the Nordic region.
