Finland reinforces border with Russia. Land crossing points will remain closed "until further notice"

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 23:19

Finland inaugurated this Monday a physical barrier with 200 kilometers along its border with the Russian Federation. The structure was built with the objective of deterring Moscow from using migrants as an instrument to destabilize the Nordic country.

The land crossing points between the two countries will remain closed until further notice. This measure comes in a context of tension between Finland and Russia, after Helsinki joined NATO in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Finland, which shares about 1,340 kilometers of border with Russia, made this decision after reports that Moscow encouraged migrants to cross the border to create instability in the country. The Finnish government considers the barrier essential for national security.
