The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has restored its connection to the main electricity grid after nearly three weeks without external supply, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced.
The IAEA Director-General, Rafael Grossi, described the restoration of power as "a crucial step" to avoid a nuclear accident at the facility, which is Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
The plant had been dependent on emergency diesel generators during this period, which represented a significant risk to nuclear safety, given the armed conflict taking place in the region.
The IAEA has maintained a permanent presence at the Zaporizhzhia plant, monitoring the situation and repeatedly warning about the dangers associated with the lack of external electrical power at the facility.
