Teen escapes kidnapping using pepper spray and jumping from car: 'She saw that he was very nervous,' says father

A 16-year-old teenager escaped an attempted kidnapping in Engenho Novo, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, last Friday. The young woman noticed an opportunity while she was inside the suspect's car and used pepper spray against him before jumping from the moving vehicle.

According to the teenager's father, she realized the man was nervous and took advantage of a moment when he was looking in the rearview mirror to act. The father explained in an interview with Globo that his daughter saw that he was very nervous and had the opportunity to do this.

The young woman was returning from school and passing through Rua Dona Romana, where she usually passes to reach the condominium where her grandmother lives. Images from a security camera at the location, which the father had access to, show that the suspect parked the car about a minute before the teenager passed by.

The family is still trying to find out if the suspect had previously seen the young woman or turned around the block to approach her. The man drove slowly down the street and noticed the parking spot before approaching the teenager.
