This limitation is provided for in European legislation for euro coins, which determines that no party is obliged to accept more than 50 coins in a single payment, except for specific situations provided for by law.
In the case of Mercadona, the 50 coins can include any combination of values, from cents to 1 or 2 euro coins. What counts towards the limit is the total number of coins presented, not the total value of the payment. From the 51st coin onwards, the merchant can legally ask the customer for another payment method.
Anyone who has accumulated many coins can use them gradually in smaller purchases or use banking deposit or exchange services. This rule is especially useful for consumers who save coins for months and then intend to use them all in a single purchase.
