Government denies profits from fuels and reinforces ERSE's powers

Notícias de Coimbra7 September 2026 at 20:50

The Government considered today that the accusation that it is obtaining profits from the rise in fuels is unfair and reiterated that it is reinforcing the powers of the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE). The position was conveyed after criticism pointing to government benefits from the increase in fuel prices.

The Executive highlighted that it is giving more powers to ERSE so that the regulatory entity can intervene more effectively in the energy sector, guaranteeing greater supervision and control over prices practiced in the market.

This response comes in a context of significant increase in fuel prices, which has generated concern among consumers and various political parties, who have questioned the Government's action on this matter.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, through Minister Miguel Pinto Luz, was the entity responsible for clarifying the Executive's position regarding the fuel issue and the reinforcement of ERSE's competencies.
