Russia decided to close the German consulate in the city of St. Petersburg, in an escalation of diplomatic tensions between the two countries. This measure comes as a direct response to the German government's previous decision to close the Russian consulate in the city of Bonn.
The diplomatic conflict originated in the discovery of a drone loaded with explosives at Leipzig airport, in Germany. This incident significantly worsened the already tense relations between Moscow and Berlin.
Bilateral relations between Russia and Germany have been deteriorating consistently, with both sides adopting reciprocal measures of expulsion and closure of diplomatic representations.
This new escalation represents another chapter in the deterioration of relations between the two countries, which were already going through a period of strong political and diplomatic tension.
