Supermarket trolleys are serving as a new habitat for seahorses in the Tagus Estuary. The D-EVOLUÇÃO initiative, promoted by WWF Portugal and its partners, is monitoring the occupation of these improvised shelters by the species.
The project has as its main objectives to track the use of these spaces by seahorses, remove submerged waste in the area and contribute to the ecological recovery of the habitat of these species in the Tagus Estuary.
Supermarket trolleys, discarded or abandoned, have become an unexpected refuge for seahorses, which find suitable conditions in these submerged objects to establish themselves in the region.
