Carla and her mother, Marimar, run a bakery with more than 72 years of history in Burgos, Spain. The lack of bakers led the two managers to decide to close on Sundays, after several job advertisements with a monthly salary of €1,600 failed to solve the staffing problem. Marimar associated the recruitment difficulties with the need to start working early, including on Sundays, stating that "they pay so much money and nobody wants to wake up early to make bread on Sundays."
Despite the reduced opening days, mother and daughter rule out the intention to close the establishment. "We will close on Sundays, but we will continue to operate," the owner assured. The relationship with customers remains central to the continuity of the business, according to the account.
The recruitment attempts continued over the past months, but the initiatives failed to gather the necessary workers and the managers ended up suspending the search. Marimar admitted the possibility of combining different generations in a future team and criticized the attitude of current workers, saying that "nowadays, workers get tired quickly."
The Villímar bakery is dedicated to wood-fired bread production. The work requires knowledge beyond just the willingness to meet the schedule, as it is necessary to evaluate the dough, monitor fermentation, and control the baking temperature.
