Huawei launches $3,000 phone on the eve of foldable iPhone debut

oglobo7 September 2026 at 17:18

Huawei presented this Monday the latest version of its ultra-premium phone with three folding parts, the Mate XT 2, which costs 19,999 yuans (US$ 2,980), about 10% more than its predecessor, the Mate XT, launched two years ago. The device has two folding mechanisms and more complex engineering than its predecessor.

Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer division, stated that the cost increase is due, in part, to the growing difficulty in acquiring memory chips. The most basic version of the Mate XT 2 functions as a regular smartphone but can be unfolded and transformed into a tablet.

Huawei and Xiaomi are escalating the dispute in the Chinese smartphone market a few days before Apple's debut in the foldable device category, which is about to make its debut in the segment.
