The Public Security Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that extends the categories of public servants authorized to carry firearms in Brazil. The proposal amends the Disarmament Statute (Law 10.826/03) and includes various categories of public servants who will be entitled to carry a weapon, subject to the exercise of specific activities.
Among the servants who may benefit are traffic agents, court officers, socio-educational agents, tax agents and tax auditors with administrative police powers, official criminal experts, environmental enforcement agents, members of the Public Defender's Office, members of federal public attorneys and attorneys of the states and the Federal District, and child and youth protection agents.
The project is being processed on a conclusive basis, meaning it will not need to go through the Chamber floor, going directly to analysis by the Constitution and Justice Committee and Citizenship Committee. If approved in this committee and there are no resources for consideration by the floor, the proposal will go to the Senate.
