After several days of high temperatures and stable weather in mainland Portugal, a cold front will change the meteorological conditions starting this Tuesday. The approach of the frontal system will bring rain to several regions in the North and Center of the country and will cause a widespread drop in temperatures, interrupting the warm weather that has dominated the last days of September.
The first periods of rain should reach the districts of Viana do Castelo and Braga between 2pm and 4pm, with precipitation sometimes moderate and locally heavy, especially in mountainous areas. The cold front will then advance south and east, affecting a total of eight districts: Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, and Guarda. The Northwest will be the region with the highest probability of precipitation for more hours, exceeding 90% in some periods.
The most significant rainfall accumulations, between 15 and 25 millimeters, are forecast for the district of Viana do Castelo, the northeast of the Braga district, and areas of northern Vila Real. In the remaining covered districts, rain should be less significant, with values generally between 2 and 10 millimeters. During Wednesday's early hours, some remnants of the front may still reach more southern areas, such as the districts of Coimbra, Leiria, and Castelo Branco, although in a more scattered and less intense manner.
In addition to the rain, the passage of the cold front will bring a colder air mass that will cause a drop in temperatures. The decrease will be felt first in the North and Center regions during Tuesday, gradually extending to the rest of the territory throughout Wednesday. According to Meteored, this could be the first more comprehensive episode with clearly autumnal characteristics since the beginning of September, bringing a cooler environment, greater cloud cover, and rain to a significant portion of the territory.
