German market remains stable after AfD victory in Saxony-Anhalt

The regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt in September 2026 marked a historic milestone for the German far right, with the AfD reaching approximately 43.8% to 44% of the vote, the party's best-ever result, while the CDU fell to 17.2%. However, the market reaction was contained: the DAX fell slightly (-0.24%), the euro remained stable and other European indices posted modest gains. Broker XTB explains that the limited impact is due to the state's small economic size (only 1.8% to 2% of German GDP) and investors' belief that the odds of the AfD taking government, even at the state level, remain low, thanks to the "Brandmauer" maintained by traditional parties. However, XTB warns that in the long term, policies such as leaving the eurozone or restoring relations with Russia could represent a significant shock to the German economy, further warning that the weakening of Chancellor Merz's government fuels political fragmentation and may raise Germany's risk premium.
