On June 5, 1878, Lisbon received the visit of the French writer Jules Verne, who arrived at the Tagus aboard his yacht Saint-Michel III, coming from Vigo. Verne seemed to have stepped directly out of one of his own extraordinary journeys, such was his reputation as a science fiction and adventure author.
The writer was accompanied by his brother Paul Verne, Jules Hetzel Jr., connected to his publishing house, and former French deputy Raoul, among other crew members and guests.
During his stay in Lisbon, Verne dined at Cais do Sodré and visited the Dafundo area, locations that were part of the Portuguese capital's riverside landscape at the time. These stops allowed the French writer to experience firsthand the port environment and Lisbon life along the river.
