The Canary Islands Government is preparing a legal action against the Spanish central Executive before the Supreme Court. The dispute concerns the figure of the representative of minors during the triage procedure, that is, the first process of identification and evaluation after arrival on the Canary coasts.
The regional Executive led by Candelaria Delgado, counselor of Social Welfare, has been claiming information from the central Government for months about this figure, which continues to be surrounded by unknowns. The Canarian executive argues that the triage of unaccompanied migrant minors is an "exclusive" competence of the State.
The announcement of the legal route was made this Monday, after Delgado met in Madrid with the minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, Elma Saiz. Doubts about the application of this competence persist three months after the entry into force of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, which specifically includes the figure of the representative during triage.
If the State does not assume the competence, the Canary Islands will appeal to the Supreme Court to resolve the question of competencies over the identification and initial evaluation of unaccompanied migrant minors who arrive at their coasts.
