The Secretary-General of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, travelled to Galicia to personally verify the difference in fuel prices between Portugal and Spain. He visited the first filling station in the Spanish region, located a few kilometres from Valença, to compare the economic reality of the two countries.
Carneiro stated that fuel in Spain is 30 to 40 cents cheaper than in Portugal. The PS has already twice presented proposals in the Assembly of the Republic to reduce fuel prices by 17 cents per litre, but those proposals were rejected by AD, the liberals and Chega.
The socialist leader also highlighted that the Government has already earned more than 1.048 billion euros from the increase in fuel taxes since taking office in April 2024 until the end of 2025. According to Carneiro, the executive is "literally making money" from the increase in fuel costs.
The Secretary-General of the PS refused to comment on the party's position regarding the motion of censure tabled by Chega.
