The party failed to elect lawmakers to the Bundestag, the German federal parliament, in the last general elections. However, it has representation at the state level.
Less than a week ago, nine lawmakers from the party abandoned their party affiliations in the state of Thuringia, weakening the party's structure in that territory.
In neighboring Saxony-Anhalt, the BSW obtained 5.3% of the votes and, above all, won five state lawmakers. These five mandates could represent the "key to power" that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) needs to form a government in that state.
