The Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM) warned of a difficult start to the school year in the region's schools. The SPM coordinator, Francisco Oliveira, pointed to the main problems as the shortage of teachers and educators, the difficulties in retaining teachers in schools in the North, and a particularly concerning situation in preschool.
The union leader considered that the school year should start later, both in preschool and in primary school, to allow for better preparation of schools and teachers.
The SPM did not rule out the possibility of new forms of protest, including the calling of strikes, if the situation is not resolved. This position was conveyed to journalists during a public statement by Francisco Oliveira.
