The Marginal, the coastal road linking Figueira da Foz to Buarcos, has closed again to traffic on weekends, with restrictions now extending to the Buarcos area as well. The local authority decided to close Avenida de Espanha and Avenida 25 de Abril on weekends, citing safety reasons for pedestrians and users of the coastal zone.
The measure is defended by the municipal council as necessary to protect citizens, especially during periods of highest attendance in the spring and summer seasons. However, the decision has generated opposition from some residents, traders and regular users of these roads.
Rua 5 de Outubro emerges as the only artery that has consensus among all stakeholders, remaining open to traffic without restrictions on weekends. This street appears to be the accepted alternative for vehicle circulation in the area.
The closure of the Marginal and adjacent avenues represents one of the municipality's most recent measures to reorganize traffic and prioritize pedestrian safety in an area that, during the warmer months, sees strong demand from bathers and tourists.
