South Florida hospitals record increase of up to 500% in e-bike accidents

South Florida hospitals recorded alarming increases in electric bicycle and scooter accidents, with Nicklaus Children's Hospital reporting a 517% rise in serious cases involving children and adolescents between 2021 and 2025. Memorial Healthcare System in Broward saw a 178% increase in serious visits between 2024 and 2025. Risk factors include the high speed of these vehicles—which can reach up to 45 km/h—and the fact that 82% of patients were not wearing helmets, in addition to children aged 12 to 15 being the most vulnerable group. A fatal teenage case reignited the safety debate, leading cities like Sunny Isles Beach, Pinecrest, and Miami Beach to adopt stricter rules, including bans for those under 16, sidewalk bans, and fines up to $500. State legislation treats e-bikes as conventional bicycles, allowing each municipality to define its own restrictions.
