Former Porto City Council President Nuno Cardoso dies at 64

The former president of Porto City Council Nuno Cardoso died today before dawn at the age of 64 at Santo António Hospital, in Porto. The information was confirmed to the Portuguese news agency by a source close to the former politician.

Nuno Cardoso led the city of Porto between 1999 and 2002. A professional engineer, he came to the position of city council president replacing Fernando Gomes, who had been elected for the Socialist Party and left for the Government.

During his term, Nuno Cardoso headed several key portfolios for the city, including the coordination of the Porto 2001 -- European Capital of Culture project and the management of the Porto Metro project.

Tomar approves two-euro tourist tax and estimates raising 300 thousand euros per year

The Municipal Chamber of Tomar unanimously approved the final version of the tourist tax regulation of two euros per overnight stay, estimating to raise around 300 thousand euros per year. The value results from approximately 150 thousand annual overnight stays (after exemptions), and the revenue will be destined for the maintenance of public space, tourist promotion and cultural support.
