A school bus crash caused 25 deaths on Saturday night on the island of Fogo, in Cape Verde. The accident occurred when the vehicle, which was carrying 39 people, including students returning from a trip, left the road and fell from a height of about 30 meters down a ravine, in the locality of Campanas de Cima, in the municipality of São Filipe.
Most of the victims are teenagers. A tire may be at the origin of the tragedy, according to initial investigations. The disaster is described as the accident with the highest number of fatalities recorded in a single day in Cape Verde.
Given the severity of the accident, the country will observe two days of national mourning.
