Mota Amaral, the first president of the Government of the Azores, expressed his lament over the existence of disunity among Azoreans. In his view, the fundamental idea of autonomy consists of "bringing together all the Azores", thus highlighting the importance of cohesion among the various Azorean islands and communities.
The former leader also insisted on the need to abolish the position of Representative of the Republic, a position that has been the subject of debate in the political context of the Azores.
Mota Amaral's statements come in the context of reflections on the functioning and future of the Azores' autonomy regime, with the aim of strengthening unity among the various parts of the archipelago.
